Grandmas Bread Pudding: Best Old-Fashioned Dessert

  • Author: Rhea
  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

A nostalgic, rustic bread pudding made with stale bread, rich custard, and a luscious warm vanilla sauce. This comforting dessert is easy to make, uses up leftovers, and tastes like home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 68 cups stale bread (torn into bite-sized pieces)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 large eggs
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (for sauce)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for sauce)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for sauce)
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract (for sauce)
  • Pinch of salt (optional, for sauce)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Tear stale bread into bite-sized pieces and place them in a 9×13-inch baking dish. Drizzle with 3 tablespoons melted butter and toss to coat.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk eggs until lightly beaten. Add milk, heavy cream, ¾ cup sugar, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Whisk vigorously until sugar is dissolved.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread. Press the bread down into the liquid to ensure all pieces are soaked. Let sit for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Bake for 45-50 minutes until the top is golden brown and the center is just set with a slight wobble. Cover with foil if browning too quickly.
  6. While baking, make the vanilla sauce: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt ½ cup butter. Whisk in 1 cup sugar, 1 cup heavy cream, and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Stir constantly until smooth and slightly thickened.
  7. Let the bread pudding cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.
  8. Serve warm with the vanilla sauce drizzled on top.

Notes

Use day-old or stale bread for best results as it absorbs custard better than fresh bread. If using fresh bread, toast it at 300°F for 10 minutes to dry it out. The pudding can be assembled and refrigerated overnight before baking. The vanilla sauce can be made up to 2 days ahead. Leftovers store in the fridge for up to 3 days. Do not freeze the sauce.
