Description
A sophisticated, warm fall cocktail that respects the bourbon by using a homemade pumpkin syrup instead of artificial flavors. It balances earthy pumpkin, spicy warmth, and smooth bourbon in just five minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 cup (240g) 100% pure pumpkin puree
- 1 cup (240ml) water
- 1 cup (200g) granulated white sugar
- 2 tablespoons pumpkin pie spice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 ounces (60ml) bourbon
- 1 large strip orange peel
- 2–3 dashes Angostura bitters
- Ice cubes (large preferred)
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, combine pumpkin puree, water, sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.
- Place the saucepan over medium-low heat and stir constantly for 5-7 minutes until the sugar is dissolved and small bubbles form around the edges. Do not boil hard.
- Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a jar to remove solids, pressing on the solids to extract flavor. Store syrup in the fridge for up to two weeks.
- In a rocks glass, gently muddle the orange peel strip to release the oils without shredding the bitter white pith.
- Add 2 ounces of bourbon and 0.5 to 1 ounce of pumpkin syrup to the glass.
- Add large ice cubes to the glass.
- Add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters.
- Stir the drink with a long spoon for 20-30 seconds to chill and slightly dilute.
- Express the orange peel oils over the drink, rub the rim, and drop the peel in. Garnish with a cinnamon stick if desired and serve immediately.
Notes
Use 100% pure pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling. Ensure spices are fresh for best flavor. The syrup can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to two weeks. Adjust sweetness by varying the amount of syrup used. For a non-alcoholic version, substitute bourbon with non-alcoholic bourbon alternative or strong pumpkin tea.
